He was the best killer there ever was!
The Hitchhiker, describing Grandpa
Lore[]
Grandpa, the patriarch of the Slaughter Family, is a deeply rooted figure whose history adds an ominous layer to the family’s dark legacy. Born in 1849, Grandpa is the oldest member of the family, and his age grants him a certain authority over his descendants—The Cook, Leatherface, and Hitchhiker—and likely positions him as the great-grandfather of both Sissy and Johnny.
Before the gruesome turn his life would take, Grandpa was a simple, skilled butcher in Texas. He worked at the local slaughterhouse, earning a reputation as one of the most efficient butchers in the area. His expertise in butchery and the craft of animal slaughter defined his career and gave him a sense of pride in his work. However, when the slaughterhouse began modernizing and replacing the hard-working butchers with machines, Grandpa’s world was upended. The industrialization of the county angered him deeply, as it not only rendered his skills obsolete but also threatened his family’s livelihood.
The change in the industry triggered a chain of events, leading Grandpa to leave the slaughterhouse in disgust. Stripped of his purpose and his profession, Grandpa’s disillusionment with the world around him likely fueled the descent into madness that followed. It is at this point that the Slaughter Family made a drastic and horrifying decision—to turn to cannibalism.
While the exact reasons behind this dark transformation remain unclear, it is likely that the family’s economic decline, compounded by the loss of Grandpa’s work and the onset of poverty, drove them to such extreme measures. The cannibalistic practices that followed were, in part, a way to survive, but they also marked the family’s complete descent into barbarism.
Grandpa’s role in the family is multifaceted—he serves as both a source of authority and a dark reminder of the twisted origins of the Slaughter Family. Despite his age and frailty, he remains a key figure in the family’s gruesome operations, leading the cannibalistic tradition that defines them. His past as a butcher, once a symbol of pride, is now a haunting relic that underscores the tragic, horrific evolution of his family.
Ability & Attributes[]
While Grandpa’s killing days have passed, he still plays a vital role in the family. Fueled by blood, Grandpa can yell and reveal the auras of Victims to Family members. Victims may stand still or hide in bushes or dark shadows to avoid detection. For every 100 blood received, Grandpa goes up a level in power.
The following attributes occur with each level:
- Level 1: Reveal ability unlocked, one Grandpa Ability active
- Level 2: Cooldown reduced, two Grandpa Abilities active
- Level 3: Cooldown reduced, three Grandpa Abilities active
- Level 4: Reveals auras of all moving Victims, regardless of bushes and shadows
- Level 5: Reveals auras of all Victims, regardless of movement
Grandpa Abilities are unlocked on Family member skill trees, selected by Family members before each game, and activate as Grandpa levels up. Grandpa Abilities have global effects benefiting the Family, such as highlighting doors and gates opened by Victims, making locks take longer to pick, or making it easier to kill Victims in close encounters.
Similar to chickens, Grandpa reveals Victims other than Maria who get too close to him. He can do this at any level.
All of Grandpa's abilities are temporarily suppressed when a Victim stabs him with a bone shard. One level of Family Bond is also lost (more with Agitator or Back for Blood).
If Grandpa is affected by Maria's Sweet Talk, his yell reveals Family members instead of Victims. The same level-based restrictions apply; for example, level 5 Grandpa reveals Family members whether they're moving or not.
Changes to Grandpa's Perks[]
Gun Interactive has announced on July 10, 2024 significant changes to how Grandpa's perks unlock and function during matches, set to roll out on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.[1] These changes aim to refresh gameplay and enhance the utility of feeding Grandpa, a mechanic that previously did not meet the developers' expectations.
The new system will categorize Grandpa's perks into different level tiers, which are tied to Grandpa’s Family Bond Level. This means that each perk will only unlock once the corresponding level is achieved by feeding Grandpa. The intention behind this change is to make Grandpa a more integral part of each match, encouraging Family players to strategize their builds and feeding schedules more thoughtfully.
Players should note that if a team only equips Level Three Grandpa Perks, none of these will be available until Grandpa reaches Level Three. This could lead to all perks unlocking simultaneously at that point.

Trivia[]
- While it’s unknown how his ability reveals victims, it can be theorized that the yelling startles the victims into moving and making noises to alert the Family to their locations.
- At Grandpa levels 1, 2, and 3, Victims can avoid detection by staying still, or by crouching - moving or not - in bushes or other shadows. At Grandpa level 4, bushes and shadows no longer work against him, and victims must stay still to avoid detection.
- Kane Hodder revealed in a QnA at Famous Monsters Fest 2024, in which during the panel had revealed that he also did some Mo-Cap work for Grandpa.
